Rosa Luxemburg concludes “Fundamentals of Union Work” course
On Saturday, 07 November 2020, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) Office Palestine and Jordan concluded a course on the “Fundamentals of Union Work” (Unionism). The course was presented by labor rights activist Mahmoud Ziadeh.
The course discussed the principles and standards of union rights and freedoms, as well as the fundamentals of union work in Palestine. Moreover, it highlighted the most prominent milestones in the history of union work in the Arab region and throughout the world. The course aimed to answer the following question: “How can we achieve social justice, and what is the change that should be brought about through union work with regard to social justice?”
The presenter of the course, Mr. Mahmoud Ziadeh, stressed its great importance because it comes at a critical time on the global level in general and the Palestinian context in particular. This is especially true after witnessing the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the exacerbating poverty and unemployment levels in the absence of Palestinian grounds for social protection, whereas the union work and activities became absolutely necessary to enable the Palestinian society to survive and resist.
Mr. Sari Harb, Program Manager at Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS), mentioned that the course was organized because the foundation is aware of the great importance of union work in enhancing and promoting social justice, and especially in light of the pandemic’s consequences, which led to undermining and violating workers’ rights both in Palestine and abroad. Harb reaffirmed the foundation’s approach of providing a suitable space to activate the critical thinking approach and enhance the active participation of all societal groups in order to foster a progressive and democratic Palestinian society.
It should be noted that Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) is a German foundation that has been working in Palestine since 2008 to provide political education and encourage social criticism. The organization promotes a critical viewpoint vis-à-vis the society and sponsors networks that introduce emancipatory, political, social and cultural initiatives through a set of programs in the fields of emancipatory education, economic and social rights, as well as solidarity and international dialogue.
